WGS Minor

Requirements for Declaring a WGS Minor

As of August 27, 2024 any student wishing to declare a WGS Minor must have completed one unspecified WGS courses with a grade of C of better.

STEPS TO DECLARE A MINOR

  1. Review the web listing of WGS courses.
  2. Review requirements below to select from: WGS Minor without concentrations, WGS Minor with a concentration in Gender Studies or a WGS Minor with a concentration in Sexuality Studies.
  3. Obtain a current copy of your Academic Advising Transcript from the Student Information System (SIS).
  4. Obtain a copy of the Declaration of Minor form online.
  5. Complete the Minor Advising Worksheet.
  6. Review your completed forms with WGS Director of Undergraduate Programs, Bonnie Hagerman, during office hours or email to make an appointment.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DECLARING A MINOR

As of August 27, 2024 any student wishing to declare a WGS Minor must have completed one unspecified WGS course with a grade of C of better.

There are three ways to complete a minor in Women, Gender & Sexuality: the Women, Gender & Sexuality minor with no area of concentration, the Women, Gender & Sexuality minor with a concentration in Gender Studies, and the Women, Gender & Sexuality minor with a concentration in Sexuality Studies.

A. The minor in Women, Gender & Sexuality (WGS) without concentrations requires the completion of 6 courses (18 credits).  One of these courses must have a non-Western emphasis (see below for a list of courses that count as fulfilling this emphasis).  The six courses must also include the following:

1. WGS 2100 - Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies - Credits: 3  

2. WGS 2125 - Race & Power in Gender & Sexuality - Credits: 3  

3. One WGS course at the 3000-level or above

4. One WGS course at the 4000-level (for which they must qualify by taking the second writing requirement, or the research and methods class)

5. Two electives that are WGS courses, which may be at any level

A minimum grade of C must be earned in any course counted toward the minor. 

 

B. The minor in Women, Gender & Sexuality (WGS) with a concentration in Gender Studies requires the completion of 6 courses (18 credits).  One of these courses must have a non-Western emphasis (see below for a list of courses that count as fulfilling this emphasis).  The six courses must also include the following:

1. WGS 2100 - Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies - Credits: 3  

2. WGS 2125 - Race & Power in Gender & Sexuality - Credits: 3  

3. One WGS course at the 3000-level or above designated as providing a Gender Focus

4. One WGS course at the 4000-level designated as providing a Gender Focus (for which they must qualify by taking the second writing requirement, or the research and methods class)

5. Two electives that are WGS courses, which may be at any level

A minimum grade of C must be earned in any course counted toward the minor. 

 

C. The minor in Women, Gender & Sexuality (WGS) with a concentration in Sexuality Studies requires the completion of 6 courses (18 credits).  One of these courses must have a non-Western emphasis (see below for a list of courses that count as fulfilling this emphasis).  The six courses must also include the following:

1. WGS 2100 - Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies - Credits: 3  

2. WGS 2125 - Race & Power in Gender & Sexuality - Credits: 3  

3. One WGS course at the 3000-level or above designated as providing a Sexuality Focus

4. One WGS course at the 4000-level designated as providing a Sexuality Focus (for which they must qualify by taking the second writing requirement, or the research and methods class)

5. Two electives that are WGS courses, which may be at any level
 

A minimum grade of C must be earned in any course counted toward the minor. 
 

*Students who have taken WGS 2897 or 4800 will not receive additional credit toward the major for taking WGS 3897.

*For the Spring 2020 semester ONLY: courses taken under the CR/NC exception, where credit is received, will be counted toward WGS minor.
 

The following courses count as fulfilling the non-Western emphasis of the minor:

            WGS 3125: Transnational Feminism

            WGS 3220: Global Perspectives on Gender & Sport

            WGS 3900: Gender & Sexuality in Islamic Culture

            WGS 4500: Capstone: Gender Politics in Africa

            WGS 4500: Capstone: Black & Indigenous Fem Survival

            WGS 4559: Global Histories of Intimacies

            WGS 4559: Global Perspectives on Men and Masculinities

            WGS 4559: A Global History of Aging, Gender & Sexuality
